After 3 years of non-conference football, the Lake Area Football team will be participating in its first year of district play. Prior to this season the Leopards participation in the sport of football was truly recreational. Many players have contributed to the building of the program with their dedication and commitment, but playoff and championship honors were out of the question.
Lake Area football players still were noticed by college coaches despite the lack of true district opponents, with 7 players signing football scholarships to various colleges around the country. This year the Fighting Leopards have a revamped staff and a slew of returning players to make a run for the Mercedez-Benz Superdome. It has been stated that the Leopards have entered possibly the toughest district in the state of Louisiana with 4 of the five district opponents making playoff appearances in 4 of the last 5 years with Warren Easton making it one game out of State Championship honors.
Led by Quarterback Ricky Jones, Center George Collins, Wide Receivers Cyron Sutton and Erin Johnson, the Leopards believe they have a fighting chance to make a statement in what has been called the “SEC” of the LHSAA. Coach Derrick Lewis (Former NEw Orleans Saints WR) is excited about this season. “This year the team is as good as it has been since its inaugural year. The talent level is very high on both sides of the ball, and the boys have been preparing themselves adequately”, said Lewis. “This will be the year of the Leopards”. We are all waiting to see how the Leopards fare in district this year. Good luck and GO LEOPARDS!
